Nawal El Saadawi argues that the subjugation of women and the social pressure bearing on them is not peculiar to Arab or Middle Eastern societies, or to the third world: it is inseparable from most of the systems governing the world, the feudal and backward and the industrial and scientifically revolutionised alike. The condition of women in contemporary societies she reads as a product of sex and of class — of the historical turns that gave man precedence over woman and one class dominion over another. Scholars and political leaders who shut their eyes to this, she writes, are still not few, and they hope to drive a wedge between women's struggle for release and the common revolt of men and women everywhere against the way societies are built. Text in Dari/Persian.
