Kaka Murad Tells a Story

Zabih Mahdi begins with his father, in the month of Hut, setting cut seed potatoes into the damp ground and turning a few spades of soil over them — those days just after the frost had let go of the earth. As he did every year, he raised a blistered hand and prayed under his breath for a year with water in it and ground with blessing in it: Lord, see to it that we take a full harvest from your land this year. The narrator remembers something else about that day: he had a fever, and thought his cheeks had gone red with it. Text in Dari/Persian.
