Mohammad Ekram Andishmand's history of the PDPA, well received from its first edition for its realism and its use of credible documents. Andishmand wrote it from the opposing side — he was among the mujahideen and the jihadi organisations — but built it deliberately out of the party's own sources and Soviet ones, so that the PDPA is examined through the eyes of its leaders and its Soviet backers rather than those of the fighters ranged against it. For all the scale of Soviet support, military and civilian, which he describes as scarcely imaginable for a governing left party, the rule it propped up did not last. Text in Dari/Persian.
