Remember, I'm Still Waiting for You

Khalida Darwish traces the urge to write back to being eight or nine years old, building a small world out of books and a pen. The stories in this collection began at a particular moment: when the Taliban again took the pen, the book, the school and the work from women — a familiar repetition, she writes, and bloodier and blacker than before. She had lived in the West for years, and the day Kabul fell she broke; old wounds she thought had healed reopened, and she was returned to the child who was left standing behind a locked school gate. Text in Dari/Persian.
