Professor Tursun Sultanov on the origins and the ancient and medieval history of the nomadic peoples of the great steppe, across a belt of Eurasia reaching from the Amur basin in the east to the Danube in the west. The focus falls on the first nomad empires formed around tribal confederations and then around largely Turkic-speaking populations — the Turkic Khaganate of the sixth to ninth centuries, the Qarakhanid and Uyghur states of Central Asia, the Bulgar state on the Ural slopes, the Turkic peoples and tribes within the Mongol empire, the Golden Horde, the Kazakh zhuzes and khanates. Throughout, the long history of nomad statecraft is read against that of its neighbours: China, Iran, Byzantium and Russia. Text in Dari/Persian.
