The Word “Tazhik” and Its Historical Roots

Gholam Jailani Dawari begins from the questions a people keep running into about themselves: who they are, where they took root, who their ancestors were, what cultures and civilisations they brought into being, and why those civilisations rose and fell. The matter is worth the trouble, he argues, because answering it carefully settles two things at once — a people's own cultural identity and historical standing, theirs and their children's, and a working understanding of the neighbouring cultures around them.
